Director: Luchino Visconti
Starring: Clara Calamai, Massimo Girotti

Released in a fascist Italy and subsequently banned by Mussolini, Luchino Visconti has taken the plot from 'A postman always rings twice' and daringly used it as a subtle way of expressing his own homosexuality.

Ruggedly handsome drifter Gino (Massimo Girotti) stops at an inn and seduces Giovanna (Clara Calamai), the fat old inn keepers young wife. Gino moves on and is befriended by Lo Spagnolo, a free spirited traveling performer. But his feelings for Giovanna are strong and they both end up murdering the old man and settle back at the inn. Gino subsequently finds it hard to live with his actions and stationary life.

A great scene is where Lo Spagnolo tells Gino he thought he was like him (gay), they have a fight then he walks off. Gino chases after him, just as Giovanna did to Gino originally. Read into it what you like. Lo Spagnolo represents a life that Gino deep down knows he wants, but he becomes confused and now feels trapped. His obsession's and true feelings of love are at crossroads... DIDOMAN - 4/9 (Netflix)
