Never a fan of a female lead in an action flick, I am officially converted thanks to Angelina Jolie. She really raises the bar on rival male leading stars that traditionally play these types of roles. In fact this role was meant to go to Tom Cruise - I'm glad it didn't. Did I mention she also does her own stunts.

Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is accused of being a Russian sleeper cell agent. Her supervisor (Liev Schreiber) believes she is innocent but counter intelligence (Chiwetel Ejiofor) has doubts and the chase begins. Sure there are a few gravity defying scenes by Jolie (did I mention she does her own stunts) but nothing to silly to damage the story, which is the real winner here.

Aussie director Phillip Noyce has used his past experience within this genre, to make a great spy film that isn't too hard to follow (like some). The action is evenly paced to keep you intrigued at every turn of the plot which will keep you guessing to the very end. Thinking of the subject matter, it's bad enough that we have terrorists in the world, but to have them live right amongst us, would have to be the ultimate proverbial salt in the wound... DIDOMAN - 8/9 (Netflix)

One of the greatest films you will ever see. It effected me on such a profound level, I can't express enough the layers of emotion I experienced throughout it. Saying that, I have absolutely no idea what this film is about. Such as life, this one's going to take a while to put all the pieces together, but it's these individual pieces of brilliance by Charlie Kaufman that make it so good.

After his wife (Catherine Keener) leaves him, Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a neurotic theater director, stages an autobiographical play set in a huge warehouse amid a life-size replica of Manhattan . The play is permanently in rehearsals running parallel with his real life & introducing actors to play the people in his life, including himself.

The film starts of normal then slowly disintegrates, just like Caden. It can become a little bit frustrating trying to understand what the hell is going on but there are some individual scenes that stand out as masterful pieces of cinema. From the moment the priest does his speech near the end (see comments below for the transcript) the film began to invade my personal space... DIDOMAN - 9/9 (Netflix)

All star ensemble cast of meat heads reunite to churn out the same old shit they've been dishing out for the past 30 years. Hey if your good at it, why change now. Funny thing is these films pay well, just like mercenary work. It was crap but I had fun anyway watching my old heroes giving some.

Stallone leads an expendable cast of action heroes to rescue some girl in South America because he thinks he can get some. Doesn't even get a kiss in the end. The plot is pointless. All you have to know about this film is that it's got one huge BFG in it & things blow up...a lot. If you don't know what B.F.G stands for then this movie is not for you.

There are two cameo's by Arnold Schwarzenegger & Bruce Willis for old times sake with a wise crack at Arnie that will bring a smirk to the face, & like a diamond in the rough Micky Rourke pulls off this one touching scene that made me think where did that come from. What a top film. Not knowing much of John Marsden's series of books & with a relatively unknown cast, I had little expectations going in but came out thinking this is one of the best movies I've seen all year.
Seven teenage Aussies from Wirrawee go camping in a remote spot in the bush the locals call 'Hell'. A week later they return home to find all hell has broke loose as Australia has been invaded by a foreign country & this time around the boats are a little bigger than usual.
With such an explosive action packed film you still need good characters to tie it all together & this lot of young Australian actors have done a superb job bringing you into their world. I'm not a fan of musicals from this era, but I remember watching this as a kid & actually thinking, this is really good. Probably due to the songs being so catchy & a biopic as well, it was not the same as other black & white musicals. I remember falling in love with America, all that nationalism, flag waving, troops etc. Hey I was a kid.

James Cagney who is best known for playing nasty gangsters, ironically wins his only Academy Award for best actor playing George Cohan, the worlds most famous Broadway composer/performer. We follow the Cohan Family during their vaudeville days & see George grow into the biggest star of his era. His songs have stood the test of time & are featured throughout the film along with authentic reproductions of his stage performances.

An emotional & engaging biopic mixed with great song & dance, it has it all. Cagney may not have been the best singer & dancer of his day (not that I could tell), but his enthusiasm & patriotism shines through. I remember loving the "Over there" song the most, but they are all great when you put a story behind them... DIDOMAN - 9/9 (Netflix)

Prohibition was a time back in the 1920's when all alcohol was banned by the government. Bootleggers & organized crime soon moved in & this classic gangster film takes us through the turbulent decade that was the Roaring Twenties through the eyes of those that lived, loved & lost.

Eddie Bartlett (James Cagney) comes back from the WWI out of work & shunned by society. An honest man with a good heart he accidentally get's pulled into bootlegging via Panama Smith (Gladys George) at the local speakeasy. Teaming up with old war buddies George Hally (Humphrey Bogart) and Lloyd Hart (Jeffrey Lynn), things begin to get complicated as the world of organized crime rears it's ugly head.

James Cagney delivers a balanced performance as the gangster with a heart, opposite a young Humphrey Bogart. Played out like a newsreel it not only is a great story but pretty educational as well. The music is also great, you will be quite familiar with many classic 1920 songs features through out, like "It had to be you" & "I'm Just Wild About Harry"... DIDOMAN - 6/9 (Netflix)

The original was heaps better but then again I might be a little biased being 13 at the time. Karate, school girl crushes & revenge against pink sweater wearing yuppies was how I rolled back then. This remake might look different but in essence it has pretty much all the same corny teenage values as the original. Although disturbingly the kids are heaps younger now.

Dr Dre (Jaden Smith) moves to Beijing with his mother. He get's the hot's (he's 12 by the way) for Meiying (Wenwen Han) but some local kid doesn't like him moving in on his bitch. To stop the bullying a janitor (Jackie Chan) begins training him in Kung Fu & the way of the Cobra

The film has a similar plot but with better fighting, probably due to Jackie Chan & it's Kung Fu this time round. They also pay tribute to all the classic scenes. Jayden Smith might not be waxing on & whacking off or doing the Crane, but a different training program is used with similar results. I found the chemistry between Master & Padawan a bit off ch'i but he's young still & the acting isn't what it's about. Yes it's a corny movie, but it's meant to be & the kids love that shit... DIDOMAN - 4/9 (Netflix)

People's normal everyday lives are so fascinating you don't need to invent up fantastic stories. Harvey Pekar knew this & with the help from illustrator Robert Crumb started an underground comic called American Splendor. This film is a masterfully blended autobiography, documentary & drama/comedy that is brilliantly held together by the talented Paul Giamatti.

The true story of compulsive obsessive collector & comic book legend Havey Pekar from Clevelend Ohio. We follow his lonely but fascinating life from boring File Clerk, to his marriage to Joyce Brabner (Hope Davis) & those controversial appearances on David Letterman. A revealing biopic that skillfully uses real footage & cartoon graphics to enhance the narrative.
No matter how drab or pathetic you think this guys life looks, you end up rooting for him. A pessimistic son of a bitch, who didn't have anything creative to write about so wrote about his shitty life. Keeping it real man. Funny thing was it didn't turn out that bad after all. A great insight into the life of that other guy in the phone book with the same name as you - He died on the 12th July 2010 aged 70 - RIP Harvey... DIDOMAN - 9/9 (Netflix)

A huge full throttle mash-up of early 90's video games, street comix & Indy rock band's tied into a romantic comedy. Somewhere lost between Gen-X, Gen-Y & the Nintendo Generation, the only way to get this is to feed more coins to keep the game going. Weird & somewhat original in delivery, it's based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) likes Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), & want's to go out with her, but has to battle 7 ex-boyfriends through a series of Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter x Guitar Hero style scenarios. The film plays out like a comic book with pop up information bubbles & cut away fantasy scenes.

It's action packed with great references to familiar icons that any 20 to 30 something guy will appreciate, but for me it was just one battle scene too many. Don't get me wrong it was a fun ride, just not funny & it dragged on a bit. It sort of picks up a bit halfway through but it's the same scene different battle. If the film had the polished character development and storyline that 'American Splendor' had (a great comic book film) then it could of been a classic... DIDOMAN - 5/9 (Netflix)
